Presidents Day Trip – Part I : Kelso Dunes

Canon T2i + 18-55mm

This trip is a second attempt after my last year’s memorial weekend failure. Long story short, I lost my phone, and was too scared to continue my journey without the aid of technology. So here we were once again stopping by Kelso Dunes to find my lost phone and pick up where I left off. I would say there is not much excitement in between the drive from LA to Las Vegas. Kelso Dunes is a perfect place to stop by for some leg stretches.

We timed it carefully to head north from LA around noon, just like what we did last time. Happy Chinese new year TT!

Although I prayed for less people, I knew it’s impossible, especially during a long weekend. We saw a lot more visitors already chilling around the peak when we started to hike at 4:30pm.

We intentionally move extremely slow so the sunset will happen when we reach the top.

Maybe the season was different, the sun direction was different from what I remembered. We didn’t get the same cool lighting when climbing up on the ridge.

The shape of the peak certainly changed after a year. Also because of how popular it got that day, I saw footprints everywhere, made me feel like Kelso Dunes suddenly took off its solitary cape, lost its magic of epicenes.

The sunset was still magnificent.

We ran downhill after the sun sank and dragged all the lights with it. I pressed down my pocket tightly this time to make sure my cell phone never flew out again.

If you look to the east, you can see night rising, expending, dark purple filling into the sky.

Its time to head north.
